ITS AN ALL DAVE WEEKEND!!!!

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

David “With Jets” emailed me a race report too. The two of them had very close finishes which is interesting because they came from very different places to get there. Anyways here is the second Ironman AZ Race Report from someone named Dave this weekend!!!

PRERACE and SWIM:  talked with John about not being 100% with chest cold, and
taking day as it comes, but woke up feeling OK, after a good sleep.  Probably
drank too much gatorade/water prior to start, and had a hard time eating as much
as should’ve.  But got in water at 6:45, like Dave nyc, and went up to the
inside “lane”.  Except for some early coughing, the swim felt great, though I
may have been zigzagging the hell out of the course.  About half way, had to
pee, but held on and got out of water in a better than expected 1:10.

T1:  as Dave NYC said, long jog around to the T1 bag pickup, 6 and change
minutes total…my wife thought I got lost.

BIKE:  Tried to go fairly easy on the first loop of the bike, since its my
weakest leg, and didn’t want to cough up a lung and bail out early.  So felt
good, though on the second loop, had to take two bathroom breaks.  Probably
still drinking too much of the orange stuff.  On the third loop, the wind died a
bit, though I didn’t realize it until the inbound half, where I wondered where
my tailwind went.  Felt as though I may have blown it for the run, as the legs
really hurt.  Got off in 5:49, which for me, was surprisingly fast.  Thought
about running a marathon…bad thought!

T2, RUN:  T2 was thankfully uneventful, and I knew the run was my stongest, so
just tried to run without pushing anything.  I alternated coke and gatorade,
with a few gels thrown in…seemed like a good combo.  First loop seemed almost
too easy, and I knew I would slow.  And slow I did, into a nice brick wall at
mile 17 or so starting the third loop.  My wife and a couple friends knew I was
hurting, and just about leaped on the course yelling at me to light a fire under
my ars!   Around 20 miles, I realized sub-11 was possible, and the old
motivation kicked in.  Got back into the 8 minute mile range, and like Dave NYC
did, I also missed marker 25…got a little nervous, but saw the bridge ahead
and realized I had less than a mile!  Felt great down the chute…and ended with
3:43 run, 10:53 overall.  Felt like Yankee stadium during the world series (when
they win)!

Incredible experience!  John, you rock man…thanks for kickin my tail all
year…like Dave NYC said, 12 hours was a great goal going in, and I could never
have imagined breaking 11!!  THANK YOU JOHN!!!  Looking forward to much more of
the same in ‘09!!!!

David [NYC] Brand’s Race Report

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

David sent me this email and I thought it was something I should share with you all, he did a lot of things right and really set himself up for a GREAT first ironman…

Hi John – below is my race report – some light reading for the CREW.

Thanks!

Race Report

Pre – race – 4am wakeup to eat my 2 PB & Js (only could eat one and a half), banana and first cup of coffee (yay caffeine!) in two weeks.  I took down a bottle perpetuem as well as a bottle of water before catching a 5am shuttle from my hotel (Hyatt Place – 1.5 miles from the race site and a great hotel) to get to transition.  At transition I put my bottles on my bike, took a few laps at the porta-potties and drank some more water.

SwimIMAZ is an in water start – 6:50 for the pros (i.e. not me) and 7am for the age groupers.  We hopped in the 63 degree water at 6:45am or so.  The 10-15 minutes of treading water wasn’t too bad actually.  Per Coach John Hirsch’s direction, I made my way to the inside “pole” position and got ready for the cannon.  Amazing nervous feeling after the national anthem was sung anticipating the start.  Boom!  We were off.  Surprisingly, there was a lot of room.  I didn’t get swum over as much as I anticipated.  I had to fight off a few wandering swimmers but not bad at all.

The swim is one 2.4 mile rectangle.  The outbound portion had a bit for a tailwind which helped with the current.  Naturally, the inbound portion had a bit of a headwind and current working against us.  I swam a 34:45 at Montauk half so I figured I could go between 1:10 – 1:15 at IMAZ.  I came out of the water in 1:08 and was naturally, very happy.

Transition 1 – It was about a quarter mile run from the swim exit, through the bag pick up and to the change tents.  It took about 5 minutes until I put on my bike stuff grabbed my bike and hit the road.

Bike – The bike course is a 3 lap course (37 miles, 37 miles, 38 miles) which winds itself from Tempe through some local roads and onto the Beeline Highway.  IMAZ was originally held in April but due to high heat and high winds, NA Sports moved it to November.  There was a good headwind on the outbound portion of the ride (slightly uphill as well).  Per John’s direction, I took it a beat or two slower than I could in order to conserve for the later miles and for the run.  I originally in the 53 ring in the front but changed to the 39 and spun more.

I reached the turnaround (mile 18 or so) and was excited to have the wind at my back and downhill road ahead of me.  I averaged around 18-19 mph on the outbound and picked it up to 22-23 on the inbound for an average first lap of 21 mphs or so for lap one.  Lap two, the wind picked up a bit which made the outbound portion a bit tougher.  I stuck to my plan and spun it out until the turnaround.  The favorable tailwind I was hoping to have on the way back dissipated a bit but still was able to keep my overall mph over 20.  Lap three was similar to lap two.

My splits were about 1:46 (37 miles); 1:53 (37 miles) and 1:51 (38 miles) for a total 5:31 or so – average mph of 20.3.  I probably had a bit more in me on the bike but given the run is my weakest leg, I thought it best to save some juice for the marathon.

Transition 2 – I came in feeling pretty good off of the bike.  Into transition to change into my shoes and off to the run course.

Run – The IMAZ run course is a 3 loop course that makes a figure 8 over two bridges and through transition around Tempe Town lake.  It is a super viewer friendly course.  Lap one I started off with sub 9 minute miles which was a bit faster then I should have probably come out but I felt good so I kept with it.

Lap two was a struggle.  It got hot and I was definitely struggling.  Midway through lap two, around mile 12 or so I decided to walk an aid station and gather myself for a couple of minutes.  After walking a bit, a fan said “Lets go Terrier” (referring to my Terrier Tri outfit – my local club in NYC).  I responded saying I was just gathering myself to which the fan responded, “ok, start running.”  And run I did.  I am not exactly sure why this set me off but from this point on, I was on.  That little kick in the ass got me refocused and in the zone.

At this point is when I started to do the math.  I knew that if I kept under 9:30-10 minute/miles I could break 11 hours.  I walked probably 4-5 more aid stations in order to get enough fuel for the race.  For those of you who have not done an Ironman, they offer a variety of food and drinks at the aid station including coke and pretzels.  Without a doubt, coke, water and pretzels got me through the race.  I didn’t touch gatorade or have any bars or gels on the run.  All coke baby.  Indeed, I began taking a cup of coke from one volunteer, pouring it into a second cup then chugging it.  It was awesome, seriously.

I got to the 40k mark around the 10:45 mark.  At this point I knew I had it.  I picked up the pace and headed for home expecting to see the 25 mile marker and then the final couple of turns.  Somehow I missed the marker and started to get very nervous that I was farther from the finish then I actually was.  I kept on the gas because I was seriously afraid that I was going to miss 11 hours.  I made the final turn and was in the chute.  I did it!!!  The clock read 10:55 which was a complete shock to me.

Pre ironman training (think 1 – 2 years ago) I though I could go sub 11 but when training started, I scaled it back to 11:30.  I then scaled it back to sub 12 because I didn’t know how the run would go.  To go sub 11 was a dream.

Thanks goes out to my biggest fan, support, and cheerleader – my wife Jessie.  Without her love and support this would have never happened.  Thanks also must go out to coach John who I say put a challenging training plan together that we got done together.  At times I wondered if I was over doing it but I guess the results speak for themselves.  Also, thanks to my family, my teammates on Terrier Tri and all my friends.

2009 Thanksgiving Day Takes

Friday, November 28th, 2008

“They were two jerks playing with match…playing with candles. Blowing out wishes, blowing out dreams. And I am still trying to decipher what’s written on my skin.”
I have a bunch of takes about thanksgiving.
1). Last year it was the only day I got off from the [hard]core-diet qt2systems.com who fixed my nutrional stuff. I am 5-8 pounds lighter right now then I was last year at this time. I am gonna eat some freakin pie since its 364 days till the next thanksgiving!
2) Running along the Macey’s day parade is cool and novel, but when it comes right down to it giant monsters floating in the air are scary in real life (see pic).
3) There are mental and emotional tides to training. For most people Thankgiving is a tidal change from casual training to focused training. If you are peaking later for imaz imfl or kona its new years. For me its thanksgiving.
4) I am very conflicted about thanksgiving: murdering a bird to white-wash genocide isn’t a holiday to me. But vegetarian stuffing and pumkin pie with a day off to train and watch football is a hard thing to knock.
5) The pie is served last to keep people from head butting some one on thanksgiving and getting arrest and thus missing pie.
6) No matter how much I train this week I am gonna gain weight because of left over and it will be worth it :)

 HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE

Ironman Lousiville Redux

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Ironman Lousville was on tv sunday and will be on again today.
I like that they show them during the off season. It gives me time to review and relive the experience with some much needed distance.
I recently was ask what was the most recent important event of your life. I though of answering with something positive and the first thing that came to mind was ironman louisvile. I have raced about a dozen of these but not since 2005 have I felt like I made a meaningful step forward. The one before that was in 2002 when I got a kona slot. I think there is a lesson there, in ironman you sometimes have to plug away for years before a breakthrough comes.
What make ironman louisville 2008 so awesome was that I raced into the top 10. I had felt like a “fake pro” until then. But this comfirmed that I am kind-of real. This is what I do now. My mom was floored when a W-9 c.e from the wtc. She was like what’s that and I was like oh, that’s a form for the money I win :) It took faith to train like a top 10 guy before I got the result. To dead-i-kate(hi kate my sister) myself. I am now a pro ironman in my head and it makes a difference in how I see myself and my training.
It was also just an amazing experience. You can hear Marcia yelling on the tv coverage. I had never felt so loved and supported at a race. Just one of those magic days ones life that don’t come often. Thanks to everyone again for everything.

Walking Through a Field Of Dead Sun Flowers

Friday, November 21st, 2008

What do you do when your angles have all flown away? There is an ache through my body that won’t go away.” - Pretty Girl Makes Graves

I spent a day recently walking through a field of dead sun flowers that were set against a gray sky as cold biting wind hit my face, and I snapped this pic of this perfect moment. I am ok when everything is not ok. I always found happiness awkward. Some things are better off broken.

On The Hook Like A Fish

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

“Do you feel like this is a dream, let me hear you breath. let me me watch as you sleep. This pilloiw is ice. It promises a shift in juidgement. I cannot deny; you were made for my punishment.” Sliopknot
A lack of direction is a good thing, to a point. That point has passed. So I set some short term goals. First, build off last week and put together another week of consistent training. Thus I now have curfew to make sure this happens. This will be needed to reach the first goal. .My thanksgiving training camp. 4 days out of my apartment La Caja aka La Caja Sin Rubia aka The Precious Blood Church (I am now calling my place that TPBC for short unless jojo wants that name for his new place). 4 days with long base miles. Lot of em. Serious training for the first time of the year.
This should set me up for the UCI weekend of Cross in RI. I pulled the trigger and am in. My sister lives right by the course. Can’t wait and don’t wanna just get crushed so I need to come with a least a minimum of fitness. With this short term plan in place I hope to avoid the ass kicking I was promised Monday by Mr. Ortel.
